Background

This plant in Košice is among the largest industrial sites in Slovakia. The plant was original a state-run enterprise called the East Slovak Ironworks, and was privatized in 2000 to U.S. Steel.[1] The plant operates three blast furnaces (BF), which have been shut down and restarted on multiple occasions for maintenance and to match shifting demand in the 2020s.[2][3] Despite proposals from the Slovak government for funding to encourage decarbonization and a shift to electric arc furnace (EAF) production technology, the 2024 annual report for the plant indicated that the company intends to continue operating only BF technology.[4][5]
