Background
In June 2013, KLK Madencilik (a subsidiary of the Kulak Group) began the environmental permitting process to build a 640-MW, $675 million, mine-to-mouth coal-fired power plant in Afyon province. The plant would be built alongside a new KLK lignite coal mine with approximately 151 million tons of reserves.[1][2]
An environmental hearing was held in Uluköy in July 2013.[3] A feasibility report was submitted in 2014.[4]
As of December 2020 the project had not progressed in more than six years, and it appears to be cancelled.
Environmental impact
Nearby residents have expressed concern that the water taken by the plant from the Mendes River will cause the river to dry out.[5]
