Background
According to reporting from November 2025, Union Peak Thermal Zim had applied to the Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA) to build and operate a 100 MW coal-fired power station in Kwekwe, Midlands province.[2] The proposed power station would reportedly supply electricity to ferrochrome smelting operations belonging to the company’s subsidiary, Global Union Peak.[3]
According to reporting from April 2026, a company called Global Union Alloy was planning to build a 70 MW coal power plant in Kwekwe to support its ferrochrome production facility.[4] Additional reporting from April 2026 referred to a 200 MW “Global Union Thermal” power plant in Kwekwe.[5] It was unclear whether all of these similarly-named projects were related or separate proposals.
Financing
As of June 2026, no budget, financing package, lender, or financial close had been reported for the project.
