Background
Unique Group selected GE Power in October 2018 to develop the power plant, which will include "one 9HA.01 gas turbine, one heat recovery steam generator (HRSG), one steam turbine generator, condenser and associated systems."[10]
The LNG-based combined cycle power plant is expected to generate enough power for 700,000 homes in the area.[11]
The power plant, which commenced commercial operations in March 2024, was reported to have cost US$612 million, an investment financed at a 75:25 debt-equity ratio. Financial close for US$463 million in long-term project financing from foreign lenders was achieved in December 2023.[6]
In January 2024, the first US$360 million tranche of this lending was disbursed to Unique Meghnaghat Power Limited, with Standard Chartered, a UK-based commercial bank, providing US$240.24 million and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), Deutsche Investitions-und Entwicklungsgesellschaft (DEG – a German development financier), and the OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) disbursing US$119.76 million collectively.[12] In total, the AIIB, a multilateral financial institution, committed a loan of US$110 million to the project.[13] OFID committed a loan of US$38 million to the project.[14]
