Background

As of early 2022, the Marlim Azul power station was the most advanced of several recently proposed gas plant projects in the Macaé region.[8] Construction of the power station began in 2021 with the arrival of new equipment to the site.[9]

In April 2023, the Marlim Azul plant was authorized to begin test operations[10], and in July 2023 the plant received its operating license from the Rio de Janeiro state environmental authority.[11]

As of July 2023, the plant was reported to be in a pre-operational state[12], with full commercial operations set to begin between late September and early November 2023.[13]

Marlim Azul has been touted as Brazil's first power plant to operate full-time using gas from the country's offshore "pre-salt" formation.[14]
