Background
The Santa Cruz power plant currently has two gas-fired units, installed in 2004 and 2010, respectively; each unit has 175 MW of generating capacity.[8][9] Plans call for the plant to convert to a combined cycle system with the addition of a 150-megawatt steam turbine.[9][10] According to the website of plant owner Eletrobras Furnas, the combined cycle addition was scheduled for completion in April 2021.[8] As of May 2022, work on the new steam turbine was said to be 98% complete.[11] However, as of November 2022, Brazil's government database still listed a capacity of 350 MW for the Santa Cruz power plant, implying that the plant had not yet begun operating in combined cycle mode.[12]
