Background

One of Brazil's newest steel plants, Simec Pindamonhangaba represents the initial venture of Mexican steelmaker Grupo Simec into the Brazilian market. Grupo Simec acquired land for the plant in 2011[1], and signed deals the following year with SMS Concast and SMS Meer, respectively, to supply equipment for the melt shop and the adjacent bar and wire rod mill.[2][3] The US $400 million project, located northeast of São Paulo, began commercial operations in November 2015, with an initial crude steelmaking capacity of 500 ttpa (thousand tonnes per annum).[4] The plant manufactures rebar and other steel bars for the construction industry, along with wire rod for industrial uses.[4]

Expansion plans

In May 2021, Grupo Simec announced that it would invest US $300 million in expanding the Pindamonhangaba plant, adding a new rolling mill, installing updated EAF technology that will double the plant's crude steel production capacity from 500,000 to 1 million tpa, and creating 750 new jobs.[1] Plans initially called for the plant expansion to be completed in 2023[1]; however, the anticipated completion date was subsequently pushed back to mid-2024.[5][6]
