Background

Promoting itself as Brazil's biggest pig iron producer, Grupo Viena operates two iron plants in Brazil with a combined annual capacity of 600,000 tonnes.[1] The larger plant, Viena Açailândia in Maranhão state, can produce up to 500,000 tonnes of pig iron annually, while the company's smaller unit in Sete Lagoas, Minas Gerais state has a capacity of 100,000 tpa.[2]

Commercial operations at Viena Açailândia began in 1988 with the lighting of the plant's first blast furnace. Four additional blast furnaces were added in 1990, 1992, 1999 and 2004, followed by a sintering plant in 2005.[3] Roughly 80% of the pig iron produced at Viena Açailândia is exported to the United States, with the remainder sold primarily to customers in Europe and Asia.[2]
