Background

Phase 1

The Virginia project became South Africa's first commercial LNG production plant when it came online in 2022 as part of the larger Virginia Gas Project that includes both helium and LNG production.[3]

Phase 1 included an incremental approach to LNG output, with a nameplate capacity of 2500 GJ/day. The LNG is used in the domestic market by industrial manufacturers and heavy logistics operators as an alternative to liquified petroleum gas (LPG).[3]

Phase 2

Phase 2 plans to expand on existing operations by drilling approximately 350 additional slant wells, building 450 kilometers of natural gas gathering pipelines, and building a more extensive processing and liquefaction facility. The expansion will increase LNG output to 34,400 GJ/day.[3]

Renergen is exploring a gas-to-power peaking plant as part of phase 2. In their 2025 annual report, Renergen indicated that it had a strong focus on finalizing funding to reach financial close and commence construction.[3] Phase 2 received a $500m loan from the US International Development Finance Corporation in 2023, as well as a $250m loan from the Standard Bank of South Africa.[7] The current planned operational date is no earlier than 2027.[6]
