Background

The first two stages of the construction of the pipeline were included in the gasification program of Gazprom for 2021-2025 for the Republic of Karelia and for the Leningrad Oblast.[1][2] The regional gasification program of the Republic of Karelia for 2022-2030 also includes the first two stages of the project.[8]

The pipeline would consist of at least three segments: Stage I: Volkhov-Medvezhyegorsk Gas Pipeline (Russian: Газопровод Волхов - Сегежа - Костомукша 1-й этап; Газопровод Волхов - Медвежьегорск), Stage II: Medvezhyegorsk-Segezha Gas Pipeline (Russian: Газопровод Волхов - Сегежа - Костомукша 2-й этап; Газопровод Медвежьегорск - Сегежа), and Segezha-Kostomuksha Gas Pipeline (Russian: Газопровод Сегежа - Костомукша) in the Arctic Circle.

As of July 2023, two stages of the pipeline, Volkhov-Medvezhyegorsk and Medvezhyegorsk-Segezha segments, were approved for construction.[5][6]
