Background

Vostochny coal mine (разрез Восточный) is a surface mine in Pavlodar region, Kazakhstan.[3]

The mine is not to be confused with the Vostochny coal mine in Russia. Vostochny Coal Mine (Kazakhstan) is owned and operated by Eurasian Energy Corporation (since 1996), which is owned by Eurasian Resources Group.[4] Eurasian Energy Corporation also owns and operates Aksu power station. .

The mine commenced operations in 1985.[4] It is located right in the middle of Ekibastuz coal basin. 6km northwest and 3 km west of the mine is Severny coal mine. In the south, the coal mine practically borders with Bogatyr coal mine.

In 2020 the cumulative production since the start of operations reached 600 million tonnes, averaging production of over 17 million tonnes per annum.[5]

In 2018, a new section of the mine Vostochny-2 was put into operation.[6] The new section contributed 7 million tonnes to the total production of 17 Mt in 2018.[7] About half of the produced coal is supplied to Aksu power station which is located nearby.[8]

Production was 15.6 million tonnes in 2021, according to Mining Technology.[9] (this may be underestimated). 2022 production reached 17.42 million tonnes.[10]
