Wan Hoong power station
In May 2020, field inspections began for a 30 MW coal-fired power station outside of Wan Hoong (ဝမ်ဟုန်), Myanmar. The plant was planned to be connected to a nearby substation.[1]
Planet imagery indicated that physical construction began in the second half of 2023.
In November 2025, the power station reportedly began operating. According to the Shan Human Rights Foundation, the plant was owned by United Wa State Army and was powering a UWSA military base, a training school, and factories producing weapons and rubber in Wan Hoong. Nearby residents reported pollution impacts from the power station and concerns over river contamination.[2]
As of April 2026, civil society organizations across the border in Thailand echoed concerns over pollution of shared riverways.[3]
