Background
The Wuhai Cogen power station was commissioned in 2005, replacing two small 12 MW units also owned by North United Power Co.[1] The project had 400 MW of capacity.[1] The project had a total investment of 1.5 billion RMB and an available mining area of 6.5 million square meters.[1] In 2007, nearly 180 million RMB was invested to improve the plant's pollution controls. These included adding a water reuse facility, a desulfurization system, and a comprehensive treatment facility for coal ash. The water reuse project can treat 1,400 tons of urban reclaimed water per hour, reduce CO2 emissions by 1.68 tons per day, and achieve zero discharge of industrial wastewater and domestic sewage; the wet desulfurization renovation project reduces sulfur dioxide emissions by 3,500 tons per year. In 2009, another 6.2 million yuan was invested to add a new desulfurization wastewater treatment system to achieve zero discharge of desulfurized wastewater.[1]
In 2019, the owner, North United Power, opened a bid to build an energy storage system of 6MW/3MWh in the facility.[2] In 2021, North United Power began an open bid for coal to supply the Wuhai power station.[3]
