Background

The 3 x 38 MW MSP Pulau Obi power station provides electricity to the Megah Surya Pertiwi ferronickel smelter in Pulau Obi, Indonesia. Construction on the smelter and the power station began in 2015, with a total investment in the facility of USD 380 million.[1]

Construction of the first three ferronickel production lines and of the coal-fired power station was reportedly completed in 2016.[2]

As of April 2017, the plant was owned by Xinxing Ductile Iron and powers Xinxing's nickel works in Morowali.[3]

According to Xinxing Casting Pipe Co., the shareholders in PT MEGAH SURYA PERTIWI (MSP), the power station's operator, were Xinxing Qiyun Investment Holdings Co., Ltd., TBP, HARITA Group, and GPS.[4]

Construction of Units 4-5 reportedly began in January 2019.[5] However, with no additional information on the expansion project, the two units were presumed to be shelved in 2021.

Planet imagery showed significant development around the site in 2022 and 2023. The fate of Units 4 and 5 was unknown.

In January 2023, with four years since any known update about Units 4 and 5, they were presumed to be cancelled.
