Background

The pipeline's source is the Yacheng 13-1 and Yacheng 13-4 Offshore Gas Field, on the South China Sea, 91 kilometers southwest of Hainan Island.[3] In October 2020 ownership of the pipeline was transferred from CNOOC to PipeChina.[4]

The pipeline has a two-way gas transmission function, running from CNOOC Yagang Gas Pipeline (Yacheng-Hong Kong) at 694 kilometers to Gaolan Natural Gas Processing Terminal in the East Oil Region of the South China Sea, Zhuhai, Guangdong province. It also ended the disconnection of the submarine natural gas pipeline networks in the two major oil areas in the east and west of the South China Sea, forming "one network" overall. At this point, the abundant natural gas in the two major oil regions can be uniformly and flexibly allocated according to the market demand in Guangdong, Hong Kong, Macao and Hainan, and the ability to ensure supply is enhanced. The pipeline is very helpful to the construction of Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area and Hainan Free Trade Port.[5]
