Background

Yima power station is a two-unit coal-fired power plant with a total capacity of 310 MW. The plant was completed between 2009 and 2010, and is owned by Henan Zhongyuan Jinyang Environmental Protection Technology Co.,Ltd.[1]

"Gezha" is the Chinese pronunciation for chrome waste. There has been more than 200, 000 tonnes of chrome waste in the area of Yima, dumped by a closed chemical factory which was producing chromium salt. It had no proper environmental protection metures, polluting the water and the soil. This coal-fired power plant featuring chrome waste disposal technology was introduced to the city in 2004 to help solving the environmental hazard from the chrome waste. The power units added chrome waste to the boilers and disposed it to non-hazard waste. However, due to the rising price of the coal and other policy reasons, the plant was losing money from the beginning of its operation in 2009.[2]

In 2013, due to the plant not meeting environmental standards, it went offline. The parent company Wuhan East Lake High Technology Group Co., Ltd is looking for buyers to take over.[3][4] However, as of 2021 the plant is still offline, and is presumably retired.
