Background

The Yulin Methanol power station was commissioned in December 2008, with construction beginning in 2006. With an annual output of 600,000-tons of methanol, the Yulin Methanol power station is currently the largest single coal-to-methanol plant that has been put into production in China. The power station had an estimated investment of 3.41 billion RMB. The plant’s heat is also used to provide heating to the Yushuwan coal mine.[1] The placing of the plant in Yulin city was also strategic, as Yulin has had increasing amounts of coal production in recent years.[2]

The second phase of the power plant project will increase the annual production of methanol to 2.4 million tonnes (a 1.8 million tonne expansion). The total investment for this second phase is estimated to be about 26 billion yuan, with an average annual sales income of about 10 billion yuan.[1] However, the current expansion, the construction for which began in 2019, only includes an increase of 500,000 tons of methanol, instead of 1.8 million tonnes and an investment of less than 6 billion RMB. The Tianchen Company was contracted to build this new addition to the existing power station.[3]
