Background

Yung-An LNG Terminal is the first LNG import terminal in Taiwan. It locates in Yung-An Township, Kaohsiung, Taiwan, owned by CPC Corporation.[3] Phase 1 began construction in 1984 and operating in 1990 with 1.5 mtpa capacity.[4] [5] Phase 2 and 3 expanded the capacity to 7.5 mtpa in 2002.[6][7] Phase 4 expansion increased the capacity to 9 mtpa in 2005. [8]As of July 2018 the terminal's receiving capacity was reported to be 10.5 mtpa.[1][9]

There are 6 underground storage tanks at the terminal with three 100,000 cubic meters each, and three 130,000 cubic meters each.[2]

Proposed expansion project

A 1.8-mtpa expansion project, which includes three new storage tanks, with 200,000 cubic meters each, and related re-gasification facilities, was estimated to be completed by the end of 2026 and become operational by 2027.[10] Construction began February 2021 according to GIIGNL.[10] However, as of February 2024, no further news on the construction progress. It's considered still not yet entering construction.

As of June 2025, there is no news about the expansion construction-start.

Yung-An LNG Terminal's receiving capacity reportedly increased to 13 mtpa.[11]

Taiwan Legislative Yuan (台灣立法院) member Chiu Chih-wei posted on social media Face Book in November 2024, saying Yung-An LNG expansion had made no progress since 2021 due to the high cost of underground storage tanks.[12]
