Background

Construction of the Zhambyl GRES began in 1964, and the first generation unit was commissioned in 1967. The power station operates on gas, with fuel oil as the backup fuel. The station is equipped with six generation units with the total capacity of 1,230 MW, and it employs 578 people. The Zhambyl GRES primarily serves consumers in the southern region, particularly the Jambyl region, Kyzylorda and Shymkent, by addressing the electricity deficit that occurs in the southern regions during the fall and winter seasons. The equipment wear and tear level of the power station decreased from 30.4% to 25% after a major overhaul of Unit 5 and ongoing repairs of Unit 1 in 2023.[11]

Construction of a new combined cycle unit of 250 MW was included into the "Electric Power Industry Development Plan until 2035" released by the Ministry of Energy of Kazakhstan in February 2024. According to the document, an investment agreement has already been signed for implementation of the project. The expected commissioning date is 2028.[12][13]
