Zhezkazgan-2 power station

From Global Energy Monitor

Background

The plan to build Zhezkazgan-2 power station was announced in February 2024 and confirmed in the government order on the 'Program for power sector development until 2035' released in February 2024.[1][2] Target completion date is 2029 and the plant would be built in the village of Kengir, close to Zhezkazgan city.[1]

The plant would be either coal-fired or gas-fired.[1] The government order does not specify the fuel type.[2] As of April 2024 it was assumed that the plant will be mostly coal-fired.

The plant would be built using investors' funds, not from the state budget funds.[1]
