AMNS Suvali LNG Terminal
Background
In May 2023, ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel (AMNS) was planning a captive port in Suvali, Hazira, India to serve its steel plant in Hazira, which would include a terminal capable of importing 5 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of LNG. In addition to LNG, the "port will be designed handle 60 [million tonnes] of bulk, break bulk cargo and finished goods."[1]
According to Maritime Gateway, port industry sources have said the project may not have strong viability given how close it would be situated to the operating Hazira LNG Terminal[1]. Other nearby facilities include Mundra LNG Terminal and Chhara LNG Terminal.[2] There were also concerns around the project's environmental impacts on the nearby creek and migratory birds.[1]
As of December 2024, AMNS was in advanced talks to build the facility. According to a source close to the project, it was being planned in response to the high costs of importing LNG via Hazira LNG Terminal.[2] The cost of the facility would be USD$1.95 billion.[2]
