Background

Sarawak Energy owns the site of the proposed mine, which was due to begin producing coal in 2021. The purpose of the mine will be to supply the Sarawak Energy power plant, Balingian New power station, which is on the same company site. The company is progressing towards the development of the site following an exploration program.[1]

As of July 2022, with no public updates on the A-North mine project in recent years, and with Sarawak Energy pursuing a more sustainable energy future in line with the United Nations Climate Change Conference's aim to reduce emissions by 2030, the project is presumed shelved.[2]
