Aceros Arequipa Pisco steel plant (Planta siderúrgica de Pisco (Spanish)) is a 850 thousand tonnes per annum (TTPA) direct reduced iron (DRI) and electric arc furnace (EAF) idled steel plant in Pisco, Ica, Peru.
Location
The map below shows the location of the steel plant in Pisco, Ica, Peru.
- Location: Carretera Panamericana Sur Km 241. Paracas. Pisco - Ica, Peru[1]
- Coordinates (WGS 84): -13.788622, -76.168172 (exact)
Background
Founded in 1964, Aceros Arequipa is Peru's largest steel maker. The company began producing finished steel products for the Peruvian market in 1966 with the opening of its new rolling mill in the city of Arequipa.[2] A second lamination facility was launched in Pisco in 1983, and the company began producing its own crude steel in 1987 following a merger with Laminadora del Pacífico.[2] In 1996, DRI operations were added at the Pisco plant, and a year later the company incorporated itself as Aceros Arequipa S.A. following the acquisition of another competitor, Aceros Calibrados S.A.[2] In 2015, Aceros Arequipa consolidated its position as Peru's market leader with the opening of a second rolling mill at Pisco.[2] A year later, the company shut down its original plant in Arequipa, signaling its intention to concentrate future operations at the Pisco location.[3]
2021 capacity expansion
In July 2021, Aceros Arequipa Pisco raised its steel production capacity from 850 ttpa (thousand tonnes per annum) to 2.1 million tpa with the inauguration of a new SMS electric arc furnace.[2][4] As of early 2022, the plant's older Danieli EAF had been deactivated and remained on standby pending an increase in domestic or international steel demand.[5]
