Adang Bay Anchorage

(Redirected from Adang Bay Port)

Adang Bay Anchorage is an anchorage point located off the coast of East Kalimantan, Indonesia.[1] At this location, barges loaded with coal along Indonesia's coasts or waterways transfer their coal to oceangoing vessels via floating cranes.

Proposed terminal

In July 2014 it was reported that Indonesia planned to build 14 dedicated coal terminals on the islands of Kalimantan and Sumatra in a bid to curb illegal coal exports. One of the proposed locations was Adang. However the government was finding it difficult to obtain private funding for the terminals in the current environment of depressed coal prices.[2]

Background

Kideco Jaya Agung uses a tugboat to transport coal from its mine to the Adang Bay Anchorage, some 58km away. From there the coal is transshipped from the barge to the vessel. Adang Bay can facilitate loading up to the Cape-size (100,000 to 150,000 tons) vessels.[3] The port also sources coal from the Tanah Merah coal terminal.[4]

Environmental Issues

A 2016 study by Siswanti et. al listed the Adang Bay Port, which is situated in a mangrove ecosystem, as being near an area used for coal mining, which has caused groundwater pollution from acid mining waste.[5]
