Background

In a detailed news report from January 2026, it was discovered that residents of the agriculture dependent Kagarko local government area of Kaduna State have been experiencing extreme levels of black soot that is coming from the rotary kilns.[1] Famers can no longer produce fruitful crops as the soil contains dangerous concentrations of lead, arsenic and PM. Waterways are also becoming polluted forcing the community to dig up boreholes. The soot is also negatively impacting the body as residents are forced to shower three times a day and experience exacerbated levels of respiratory issues. In a 2021 Social and Environmental Impact Assessment posted by ANRML it was said that the life expectancy rate of the 20,000 people living in the area is 44 years old.[2]
