Background

Aleksievskaya Coal Mine (шахта Алексиевская) is an underground coal mine in Kemerovo Oblast, Russia. The mine used to be part of Zarechnaya Coal Company which declared bankruptcy in 2017, as a result there have been significant layoffs at the mine. Kuzbassrazrezugol bought the mine in late 2021.

As of April 2021, the mine had produced no coal since May 2020 and was up for sale. Up to May 2020 the mine's production was up to 2 million tonnes per year.

It was not clear whether the mine has been operating and producing under the new ownership of Kuzbassrazrezugol, although in February 2022 there was a media report of suspension of activity at several mines, including at Aleksiyevskaya due to non-compliance with safety standards.

As per Argus Russian coal report, no production was reported for the mine in 1H 2022. A media report from July 2022 stated that the mine was acquired by Kuzbassrazrezugol to undertake safety works in order to avoid flooding of the neighbouring Baykaimskaya coal mine, but not to continue production. It was therefore assumed that the mine was mothballed.

In June 2025, bankruptcy proceedings for Aleksievskaya Coal Mine remained ongoing. The Arbitration Court of Kemerovo Oblast extended the bankruptcy (insolvency) procedure until December 1, 2025, and a creditors’ meeting was scheduled for July 24, 2025, to review the bankruptcy trustee’s report on the debtor’s financial condition and assets. This confirmed that the mine remained under bankruptcy administration and inactive, with no indication of a resumption of coal production as of mid-2025.
