Background

Antonovskaya Coal Mine (шахта Антоновская) is an underground mine in Kemerovo Oblast, Russia. Shakhta Antonovskaya JSC owns and operates the coal mine, used to be owned by Sibuglemet. The majority shareholder of Sibuglemet was the State Development Corporation VEB. In 2022 following the sanctions against many Russian companies, a new company Novaya Gornaya Management Company LLC was formed to replace Sibuglement Holding LLC as the manager of the coal assets. Later in March 2022, VEB ceased to be the the 71% majority shareholder of the Novaya Gornaya Management Company LLC following the management buy-out of the company. Now 4 private individuals individuals each hold 17.6%.

Evraz was planning to acquire the assets of Sibuglemet in 2020, but this deal fell through. Evraz also used to manage Sibuglemet assets from 2015, the management services agreement was terminated in November 2020.

The mine began operating in 1993 and has a workforce of 810 people. The capacity of the mine is stated at 920 thousand tonnes per annum.

In December 2021, the Novokuznetsk District Court supported the demand of the Siberian Department of Rostekhnadzor (Federal Service for Environmental, Technological and Nuclear Supervision) and suspended the operation of several drifts of Antonovskaya Mine for 90 days due to exceeding the permissible concentration of methane.

In 1H 2022, the mine produced close to 0.5 million tonnes, which was 72% higher than in the same period in 2021. A media source from June 2023 reported that the mine is producing about 1 million tonnes per annum, although no exact production figure was available.

In November 2025, the Antonovskaya coal mine reported that cumulative coal production since the beginning of the year had reached 1 million tonnes. According to the mine’s annual budget plan, production was expected to increase by a further approximately 27,000 tonnes by the end of 2025.

In 2021, a media source reported that the mine will stop producing in 2027.

Incidents

A fatality was reported at the mine in September 2023. Another worker received serious injuries. Both were travelling in a belt conveyor that was not equipped for transporting people.

In March 2025, Russia’s Federal Service for Environmental, Technological and Nuclear Supervision (Rostekhnadzor) temporarily suspended the driving of a conveyor crosscut at the Antonovskaya coal mine due to a dust explosion hazard and the absence of a free passage in the mine working.
