ArcelorMittal Duisburg steel plant, also known as ArcelorMittal Ruhrort, ArcelorMittal Hochfeld GmbH, ISPAT Stahlwerk Ruhrort GmbH (predecessor), Mittal Steel Ruhrort GmbH (predecessor), ArcelorMittal Ruhrort GmbH (predecessor), is a steel plant in Duisburg, Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany that operates electric arc furnace (EAF) and basic oxygen furnace (BOF) technology.

Background
The Duisburg steel plant originally started production in 1854 and was operating 8 blast furnaces by 1912; the last of these shut down in 1993. [1] The plant was originally owned by Thyssenkrupp, but was acquired by Ispat Steel in 1997, which later became ArcelorMittal in 2007.[2] Since the acquisition, the two companies have maintained a close relationship with ArcelorMittal continuing to purchase pig iron from Thyssenkrupp for the Duisburg facility. However, in 2025, ArcelorMittal announced it would not extend the current purchase agreement with ThyssenKrupp (which runs until 2027) due to concerns over high carbon costs.[3]
The company has announced plans to transition from BOF to EAF steelmaking by 2030.[4][5]As of 2025, ArcelorMittal has cancelled decarbonization plans for their Bremen and Eisenhuttenstadt sites, but has not directly cancelled their plans for the Duisburg site.[6]
