ArcelorMittal Vanderbijlpark Steel Works is a 4500 thousand tonnes per annum (TTPA) blast furnace (BF), basic oxygen furnace (BOF) and direct reduced iron (DRI) steel plant operating in Vanderbijlpark, Gauteng, South Africa.
Location
The map below shows the location of the steel plant in Vanderbijlpark, Gauteng, South Africa.
- Location: Delfos Boulevard, Vanderbijlpark, Gauteng Province, South Africa[1]
- Coordinates (WGS 84): -26.657367, 27.822310 (exact)
Background
The ArcelorMittal Vanderbijlpark Steel Works was built in 1943 by the Iscor Company to bolster the South African war efforts during World War II, and was converted to a fully integrated plant in 1947. [2]
In its decarbonization plan, ArcelorMittal South Africa announced that it plans to close its Blast Furnace C by 2030 and to continue operating its Blast Furnace D with new "green technology". The plant will also replace its BOF capacity with EAF.[3] ArcelorMittal SA is pursuing additional potential green steel projects: they are partnering with Sasol to develop green hydrogen for the plant and for export, and working on a carbon capture and utilization technology to convert emissions from the plant into usable chemicals. [4]
Workers went on a two week strike in 2022 over wages, ending in a signed deal between the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa and ArcelorMittal.[5]
