Background

In August 2023, Matuwid.org reported that Atimonan One Energy was seeking partners for a 2400-MW LNG-fired power plant (Atimonan power station) and associated LNG terminal with a floating storage unit (FSU). The total cost of the project, including the power plant, is expected to be P175 billion.[1]

As of June 2024, Meralco PowerGen Corp was still interested in developing the LNG project.[3]

However, a June 2025 press release from Meralco suggested that the company would be developing the power plant as a coal-fired facility, with no mention of burning LNG at this project. The project was therefore considered to be cancelled.[4]
