Background

The Port of Shanghai's SIPG Coal Branch handles mostly coal, sand, and gravel, and it also acts as a shipping agency. There are four terminal management offices and 17 berths. The combined throughput of these berths is more than 30 million tonnes per year, with storage yards of over 50 acres.[1]

In 2012 the port handled 101 million tonnes of coal.[2]

In 2019 and 2020, China limited coal imports from Australia due to a reported oversupply of coal in previous years, lowering coal handling at the Shanghai Port.

The Chinese government forecasted that by 2025, Shanghai Port would be handling 47 million TEUs annually, making it one of the biggest ports in China.[3]
