Background

Bashundhara Multi Steel Plant announced its plan to invest US $500 million to build and an electric arc furnace (EAF) with a capacity of 1.25 mtpa in Mirsarai, Bangladesh, expected to become operational within the year 2025.[1][2] The construction of the plant was expected to start in January 2021.[3] The project was inaugurated on 20 November, 2022, among two other projects of the Bashundhara Group.[4]

In January 2021, Bashundhara Group, ordered a MIDA endless-casting rolling minimill from Danieli to produce more than 1.0 mtpa of rebar and wirerod for the local market, to be installed at upcoming plant in Mirsarai.[5] In September 2022, Bashundhara Multisteel Industries Limited signed a contract with SMS group to install an integrated facility to produce more than two million tons of hot rolled coils annually with the goal of filling the gap in demand for flat products in Bangladesh.[6]

In March 2025, the start date was pushed to mid-2026.[7] Later in 2025, the project was described in the news as "in disarray" with a variety of issues including government and utility permits, import and consignment, and delayed or cancelled funding and loans. That mid-2026 deadline was thus described as "uncertain."[8]

In May 2025, a company official was arrested for forging a letter in an attempt to avoid consignment charges at the Chattogram port.[9]
