Background

Bayanshand Coal Mine (Зүүн Хөшөөтийн нүүрсний уурхай) is an operating surface coal mine located in Mandakh soum, Dornogovi Province, southeastern Mongolia, approximately 30 kilometres south of the Mandakh soum centre.[6]

The Bayanshand deposit is part of the broader Dovtsog Khudag coal field in Mandakh soum, Dornogovi Province. Between 2015 and 2017, Tumen Ail Invest LLC (Түмэн айл инвест ХХК) conducted detailed geological exploration of the deposit, which confirmed coal reserves of 260 million tonnes across the licence area.[6]

Mining commenced in November 2022.[6] A detailed environmental impact assessment (report no. 2020/Б-163) was approved by the relevant Mongolian authorities on 25 March 2022.[7]

In 2024, Tumen Ail Coal LLC (Mongolian: Түмэн айл көүл ХХК) was established as the dedicated operating entity for the Bayanshand mine, assuming management of mining, transportation, and logistics activities. A subsidiary, Tumen Ail Energy LLC, was incorporated to develop a planned 100 MW mine-mouth thermal power plant at Mandakh.[6]

The Bayanshand deposit has confirmed reserves of 100 million tonnes of sub-bituminous coal.[6]

Coal extracted at the Bayanshand mine is transported by dedicated haul road to a loading and unloading terminal equipped with a 3.7-kilometre branch railway line, from which coal is dispatched entirely by rail for export.[6]

Production

In 2024, Tumen Ail Invest LLC produced 3,198,590 tonnes of long-flame coal at the Bayanshand mine.[8]

Infrastructure and transport

Coal extracted at Bayanshand is transported by dedicated haul road to a loading and unloading terminal equipped with a 3.7-kilometre branch railway line, from which coal is dispatched entirely by rail for export.[6] The mine site is located approximately 484 kilometres east-southeast of Ulaanbaatar, 180 kilometres west-southwest of Sainshand, and 235 kilometres from the Khangi–Mandal border crossing with China.[9]
