Background

Baykaimskaya coal mine (шахта Байкаимская) is an underground mine near Mokhovo, Kemerovo Oblast, Russia.[12] The Baykaimskaya coal mine is owned and operated by Kuzbassrazrezugol, which in turn is majority owned owned by Ural Mining Metallurgical Company.[13][12][14]

It is the only underground mine operated by Kuzbassrazrezugol. Underground mining is carried out on the territory of the surface mine Mokhovsky Coal Mine.[15]

In November 2021, 55 miners evacuated from the mine following a smoke alarm, there were no casualties.[16] In 2022, the Federal Technical Supervision Authority 'Rostechnadzor' confirmed fire safety violations at several underground mines in Kuzbass, inlcluding at Baykaimskaya.[17] In total, 13 inspections were conducted at Baykaimskaya during 2022.[18]

The annual report of Kuzbassrazrezugol referred to the underground portion of production at Mokhovsky (ie at Baykaimskaya) at 2.4 million tonnes in 2020 and 0.85 million tonnes in 2021.[19] The mine's production was very negligible in the first half of 2022, a 90% reduction compared to the same period in 2021.[20] It appeared that the mine's operations were suspended in 2022 following the inspections and the uncovered safety issues.

Kuzbassrazrezugol's 2022 and 2023 annual reports did not refer to any activity at the mine.[13] However, according to the Kuzbassrazrezugol's 2023 report on sustainable development, the mine was still operational.[21] January 2024 news stated that the mine's operations were suspended again, suggesting that it was operational before.[22] In September 2024, it was reported that permissible concentration levels of methane were exceeded at the Baykaimskaya mine. For this and other violations, the mine received two administrative protocols, and the court suspended operations for 30 days. However, the mine resumed shortly after.[23] In May 2025, coal extraction at longwall No. 10 of the Baykaimskaya mine was suspended for another 30 days, due to exceeding permissible methane concentration levels and multiple industrial safety violations.[24] In November 2025, Rostekhnadzor temporarily restricted degassing drilling operations at the Baykaimsky seam due to violations of industrial and explosion safety requirements; the materials were referred to court following a serious workplace injury.[25]

Methane Plumes Detected Nearby

Global Energy Monitor researchers analyze satellite-detected methane plumes in order to determine whether they have been observed at or near the site of GEM energy assets. The satellite data provider creates imagery of individual methane plumes and estimates their emission rates at the time of observation. GEM has reviewed many of these plume detections against Google Earth imagery and GEM’s own energy infrastructure tracker data. The following table lists methane plumes which are associated with the energy asset or facility based on distance and manual review. (A full description of the analysis process is available in the Global Methane Emitters Tracker methodology wiki page.)
