Extension

In 2019, Canyon Coal began developing phase 2 of the Ukufisa mine. This project, which has been renamed "Bekezela Colliery," is located on the Palmietkuilen farm in the town of Springs, and sits adjacent to the phase 1 section of the Ukufisa mine. According to Canyon Coal, it will extend Ukufisa's life of mine, which was originally estimated to be around 5 years.

Following the commissioning of Bekezela, the Ukufisa phase 1 site will function as a satellite operation for about five years, with the main mine infrastructure being located at phase 2's Bekezela site. RoM coal will be trucked from Ukufisa 1 to be processed at Ukufisa 2, together with the RoM from the latter.. The Bekezela mine's target run-of-mine production is set at 600,000 tonnes per month, and its life of mine is estimated at 22 years.

Bekezela was granted environmental approval in March 2019, and construction was slated to start before the close of 2019, with first coal production expected by Q1 of 2020. However, as of November 2022, it is unclear whether or not the extension project is operational.
