Extension

In 2019, Canyon Coal began developing phase 2 of the Ukufisa mine. This project, which has been renamed "Bekezela Colliery," is located on the Palmietkuilen farm in the town of Springs, and sits adjacent to the phase 1 section of the Ukufisa mine.[5] [6] According to Canyon Coal, it will extend Ukufisa's life of mine, which was originally estimated to be around 5 years.[5]

Following the commissioning of Bekezela, the Ukufisa phase 1 site will function as a satellite operation for about five years, with the main mine infrastructure being located at phase 2's Bekezela site. RoM coal will be trucked from Ukufisa 1 to be processed at Ukufisa 2, together with the RoM from the latter.[7]. The Bekezela mine's target run-of-mine production is set at 600,000 tonnes per month, and its life of mine is estimated at 22 years.[5]

Bekezela was granted environmental approval in March 2019, and construction was slated to start before the close of 2019, with first coal production expected by Q1 of 2020.[7] However, as of November 2022, it is unclear whether or not the extension project is operational.
