Belousovo-Leningrad Looping Gas Pipeline

Background

In November 2023, an explosion causing a fire was reported on the pipeline. According to the Russian Emergencies Ministry, the gas pipeline had caught fire in the Vsevolzhsk district of the Leningrad region after depressurization. No casualties were reported.[3][2]

Modernization of the existing pipeline and construction of a looping pipeline were included in the list of "Planned Transmission Gas Pipelines" issued by the Ministry of Energy of Russia in May 2015 and revised in May 2023.[6] According to the original document, both projects were expected to begin in 2016.[7] The looping pipeline, which will connect to transmission pipelines Gryazovets-Vyborg I Gas Pipeline and Gryazovets-Vyborg II Gas Pipeline and cut into into transmission pipelines Belousovo-Leningrad and Serpukhov-Kalinin-Leningrad, will be built to increase reliability of gas supply to the city of St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region as well as export of gas.[7]

In 2024, the project was removed from the list of "Planned Transmission Gas Pipelines" released by the Ministry of Energy of Russia in May 2015 and revised in March 2024.[8] The project is considered to be cancelled.
