Background

The Besh-Burkhan Coal Mine (Бешбурхан) is an operating underground coal mine located in Nookatsky District, Osh Region, Kyrgyzstan. The mine is part of the South Fergana coal basin[9]

The deposit's balance reserves were estimated at 38,141 thousand tonnes of lignite coal.[9] The mine is operated by the state enterprise Kyrgyzkomur. In August 2023, Chinese investors from Shanci Soal Investment Group LLC entered into a partnership agreement with Kyrgyzkomur for the joint development of the Besh-Burkhan deposit.[10] Under the terms of the agreement, the mining licence remained in Kyrgyzstan's ownership, while the Chinese partner was entitled to 70% of the extracted coal.[10]

The Besh-Burkhan open-cast mine was officially commissioned on August 29, 2025. Its annual production capacity was planned to equal 280,000 tonnes of coal. Total investment in the project amounted to $25 million. Coal from the mine was designated primarily for the market of Osh Region.[11]

As of November 2025, preparatory mining works were underway at the site; therefore, the mine was classified as under construction.[12]
