Background
The Binungan coal mine is an opencast mine, operated by Berau Coal Energy, with a capacity of 9.3 million tonnes-per-annum (MTPA) in Pegat Bukur, Sambaliung, Berau, East Kalimantan, Indonesia.[3] Along with the Sambarata coal mine and Lati coal mine, it produces a combined 32 million tonnes per annum.[4]
Production at Binungan began in 1996, and it is the company's largest and longest-producing asset by volume; in 2024, the site produced 15.3 million tons of coal, up from 13.9 million tons in 2023 and 12.4 million tons in 2022.[5] PT Berau Coal's controlling ownership has changed hands several times, most recently in 2016, when PT Sinarindo Ekamulya, an entity affiliated with Indonesia's Sinar Mas Group, became the controlling shareholder.[5]
As of December 31, 2023, per the company's most recent estimation report (published March 2024), Binungan held estimated coal resources of 2,084 million tons — comprising 1,054 million tons measured, 591 million tons indicated, and 439 million tons inferred — representing roughly 62 percent of PT Berau Coal's total resource base across all four sites.[5] Coal reserves at Binungan were estimated at 285.9 million tons (219.6 million tons proved and 66.3 million tons probable), accounting for approximately 71 percent of the company's total reserves of 404.1 million tons.[5] Coal from Binungan and the company's other sites carries a calorific value ranging from 4,200 to 5,800 kcal/kg (gross as received) and is used primarily as fuel for steam power plants.[5] Mined coal is transported via a 28-kilometer haul route from Binungan to Suaran Port for onward shipment, and the site received a national "Green" PROPER environmental performance rating in 2024, alongside the Lati and Sambarata sites.[5]
