Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania Plant

The Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania has a heating plant built in 1951 with five coal stokers that burn 7,000 tons of coal per year to heat 1.5 million square feet of residence halls and academic buildings. In September 2009 the University received a $500,000 Energy Harvest grant from the state Department of Environmental Protection to replace one of its vintage coal stoker boilers with a large capacity wood-chip biomass boiler, which will take on the majority of the heating plant's workload and is expected to decrease the University's annual coal consumption by 67 percent.[1]
