Background
Bogovina Coal Mine is an underground mine near Bogovina, Boljevac district, Serbia. The mine is operated by the Public Company for Underground Coal Mining Resavica, which was established as per the government's decision in 2003.[7] It is a state-owned entity.
Bogovina had its highest production in the period 1970-1982, when it regularly produced over 0.2 million tonnes of coal per year.[8]
It was anticipated that the mine will be closed first by 2017 and then by the end of 2018.[9][10] However it appeared that the mine was still operational in 2020 as one miner was reported dead following an accident in November 2020.[11] A study from 2022 referred to the mine's production of 0.01-0.03 Mtpa on average from the Bogovina-Iztok section.[12] A report from March 2023 suggested that the mine was still active.[13]
2023 coal production of the mine was only 5,000 tonnes.[4] The plan for Bogovina was to produce 8,000 tonnes in 2024 (0.008 million tonnes).[4]
JP PEU Resavica's plan was to produce 0.4 million tonnes across all if its eight underground mines.[4]
The Bogovina coal mine was reported to be nearing depletion of its coal reserves. According to Serbia’s Just Energy Transition Plan adopted in July 2025, the Bogovina, Jasenovac, and Aleksinac mines were approaching exhaustion of their coal deposits, and technical and technological conditions made further exploitation increasingly difficult and economically burdensome for the state-owned mining company PE UCM Resavica. [14]
As of March 2026, no updates regarding the operational status of the mine or its production levels were available. The mine was still considered open, based on the above mentioned document assessing the potential socio-economic impact of its closure.
