Background
The Bull Mountains No. 1 mine (MSHA ID: 2401950) is an underground coal mine, operated by Signal Peak Energy, LLC, a subsidiary of Global Mining Group. It produces 7.5 million short tons per annum, near Roundup, Montana, United States.
Expansion
In 2020, Signal Peak sent plans to expand its Bull Mountains mining operations to the U.S. Department of the Interior's (DOI's) Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement.[6] These plans remained under federal review for years, until June 2025, when the DOI announced the approval of the mining modification plan.[7] The modification was approved through an expedited environmental review designed to fast-track energy projects in response to the U.S. national energy emergency declared by the Trump Administration in January 2025.[8][9]
The approval allows for the recovery of an additional 22.8 million tonnes of federal coal and 34.5 million tonnes of adjacent non-federal coal, a total which will extend the life of the Bull Mountains mine by at least nine years.[7]
