Background

Calombo Mine or Mina do Calombo is a coal mine in Arroio dos Ratos, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. It is owned by Copelmi Mineração. Calombo Mine is owned by Copelmi Mineração LTDA. The mine is often referred to as "Arroio dos Ratos." Copelmi is Brazil’s largest private coal mining company, controlling more than 80% of the country's industrial coal market.

The mine operates as a surface (open-pit) strip mine. The mine began operations in March 2018, according to Brasil Mineral.

According to a 2017 Argimax.com ranking, Calombo was Brazil's fourth-largest coal mine, producing 853,497 tonnes annually. A 2019 industry report listed Calombo as Copelmi's second most productive coal mine, with annual production of 906,000 tonnes.

In 2020, the mine produced an estimated 4.167 million tonnes of coal, ranking it as Brazil's largest coal mine by output that year. In 2023, Copelmi's Brasil Mineral industry profile recorded output at the Arroio dos Ratos mine at an estimated 1.6 million tonnes of mineral coal. A a separate estimate by GlobalData put the figure at 4.24 million tonnes, likely reflecting a broader accounting perimeter that may include coal processed at Copelmi's Recreio beneficiation plant in Butiá.
