Background
The original environmental impact statement for the Illapa power station was approved in February 2013[4], and plant owner Rurelec PLC acquired a pair of renovated Siemens 701 DU turbines for the plant in June 2013.[5] The 255 MW plant was designed to run on natural gas provided by the nearby Mejillones LNG Terminal.[6] A modified EIS for transmission lines associated with the plant received approval from Chilean authorities in April 2016.[4] Plans initially called for construction to begin in March 2016 and for the plant to begin commercial operations in June 2017.[4]
As of April 2018 the plant remained unfinished, and owner Rurelec PLC was reportedly seeking a buyer for the project.[7]
As of December 2021, Chile's Ministry of Energy continued to list the Illapa power station as an approved project[8], and as of November 2022 owner Rurelec's website still stated the company's intention to develop or sell the project.[9] However, there has been no additional news about the plant in the past two years, and it appears to be shelved.
