Background

Cerro Mine or Mina do Cerro is a coal mine near the city of Cachoeira do Sul, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.[5] Cerro Mine is owned by Sociedade Mineradora do Cerro Ltda, a subsidary of Copelmi Mineração LTDA.[5][6][7] Copelmi is Brazil’s largest private coal mining company, controlling more than 80% of the industrial coal market.[8]

The mine operates as a surface strip mine and commenced operations in November 2004.[9] The mine produced thermal coal (carvão energético) supplied to the Braskem petrochemical complex at the Polo Petroquímico de Triunfo and to thermoelectric power plants.[10]

Government reports show that coal production at the mine reached 423,662 tonnes per annum in 2005[7], but it has since declined. A 2019 industry report listed the Cerro mine as Copelmi's third most productive coal mine, with annual production of 100,000 tonnes.[11]

In June 2022, Brasil Mineral reported that the Cerro Mine had produced 225,200 tons of coal in the previous year (2021), and had a reported nameplate capacity of 500,000 tons.[12] Brasil Mineral's 2024 industry profile recorded output at the Cerro mine at an estimated 208,000 tonnes of coal in 2023.[13]

As of late 2024, Copelmi was pursuing a licensing process with the Rio Grande do Sul state environmental agency FEPAM for an expansion of mining operations at the site.[14]
