Background

The Chernigovets (or Chernigovskiy) coal mine (разрез Черниговец) is a surface coal mine in the town of Berezovsky in the Kemerovo Oblast, Russia. The Chernigovets coal mine is owned and operated by Chernigovets JSC, which is owned by SDS UGOL. SDS Ugol is part of the Holding Company Siberian Business Union). It was established in 2006 as an industry holding company.

Large-scale mining began at Chernigovets mine in 2011. The mine complex processes coal from the Kedrovsko-Krokhalyovskoye and Glushinskoye coal deposits.

SDS Ugol website states the mine's capacity at 6.5 million tonnes per annum. A media report from July 2023 referred to the mine producing 6 million tonnes per year.

The project to increase capacity to 7.5 million tonnes was mentioned in the Russian Government's 'Programme for Coal Industry Development up to 2035', released in June 2020. There was no news on the project's construction status, as of September 2022 or as of July 2023. The governor of Kuzbass stated in September 2022 that new mine projects are on hold due to infrastructure restrictions of coal exports through the Eastern route of Russian Railways, only the projects that are nearing completion are being finished. Given no news on the expansion project, it is considered Shelved.
