Background

Crown Mountain Coking Coal Project is a proposed surface mine set to produce 2 million tonnes per annum, in the East Kootenay Region, near Sparwood, British Columbia, Canada.

Crown Mountain Coking Coal Project is an open-pit metallurgical coal mine proposed by NWP Coal Canada Ltd. The production capacity of the project would be 3.7 million tonnes per year over a mine-life of about 16 years. Run of mine coal reserves are estimated at 56 million tonnes, of which 50 million tonnes are proven and 6 million tonnes are probable.

In 2018, Bathurst Resources struck a C$121.5-million agreement with project owner Jameson Resources to acquire a 50% interest in the Crown Mountain project. Jameson Resources has said that with the financial backing and management assistance from Bathurst, the company was confidently moving Crown Mountain forward on all fronts. Jameson CEO Art Palm said, “We anticipate continuing to work hand-in-hand with Bathurst as Crown Mountain heads towards gaining its environmental approvals, mining permits, and ultimately construction and development of the mine.”

A bankable feasibility study for the project was completed in 2020 by Stantec and Sedgman. As of March 2021, the project's assessment status was pending review by the Impact Assessment Agency of Canada.
