Background

Dalnyaya coal mine (шахта Дальняя) is an operating underground mine located in Topolevy, Krasnosulinsky District, Rostov Oblast, Russia.

Dalnyaya coal mine is owned and operated by Donskoy Anthracite JSC. The company was previously owned by the Ukrainian DTEK but was sold to Valleyton Investments Ltd in 2022.[3] It appears that there were further ownership changes in 2023 - in June 2023 it was reported that the company is now owned by Russian-registered SBK Premier.[4][5]

As of January 2022, the mine was producing about 0.9 million tonnes of anthracite coal.[6] In 2022 Donskoy Anthracite has consolidated the mine operations with the previously mothballed Mine 410 with a view to increase production capacity to 1.3-1.4 million tonnes per annum by 2027.[6][7] Investments amounted to 1.5bn roubles.[6]

In 2022, the mine produced just short of 1 million tonnes, which was 30% lower than in 2021.[8] Difficult geological conditions were cited as one of the reasons of lower production.[9][8]

In 2018 there was one fatality as a result of the collapse of the mine at the depth of about 550m. More than 80 mine workers evacuated.[10]
