Dhori Group Coal Mine

From Global Energy Monitor

The Bokaro and Kargali coal mines are a group of opencast and underground coal mines, operated by Central Coalfields Limited, a subsidiary of Coal India, producing 10 million-tonnes-per-annum, in the East Bokaro coalfield, in Jharkhand state, India.[1]

The operating mines include: Bokaro, Giridih, Kabribad, Kargali mines, Karo mines, Khas Mahal mines, and the Konar opencast project.

Kargali underground mines were recommended for closure of its operations due to economic unviability from 2016-17 and efforts for excavation of remaining 1.2 MT through Opencast is being explored by the CCL.[2]

In 2017, the company proposed expanding the Karo mine to 11 million-tonne-per-annum and amalgamating Konar and Khas Mahal into an 8 million-tonne opencast mine, effectively tripling the capacity in the region.[3]

There was additional proposal in 2013, called the Selected Dhori Group of mines, which would have added an additional 8.25 million tonnes per annum. The project has been in operation and ceased operations due to violation of its existing permission to operate. The proposal for expansion is pending approval and clearances.[4] As of 2020, the mines appear operating, producing 2.22 million tonnes.

In response to a right of information request in 2021, the mine is not listed by the Government of India as an active new mine project. It is presumed shelved.[5]
