Background
In 2023, the DINSON Iron and Steel Company (Disco) announced plans to build a captive 100 MW thermal power station using “waste heat” from its Dinson Chivhu iron and steel plant in Manhize.[1][2]
As of April 2024, a 50 MW thermal power plant at Manhize was reportedly 98% complete.[3]
According to reporting from October 2024, the 50 MW power plant was operating and burning coal using circulating fluidized bed (CFB) technology. The article described the facility as using “waste heat” from the steel blast furnace.[4]
Reporting from March 2025 appeared to confirm that the 50 MW power station was generating electricity using coal.[5]
In January 2026, a mining engineer from the Zimbabwe School of Mining reportedly said that the Manhize steel plant included a 50 MW solar plant and was developing a 200 MW waste-gas recovery system.[6] However, in February 2026, Dinson’s public relations manager reportedly said that the operating power plant was using coal from Hwange.[7]
