Background

Entuba Coal Mine is a surface and underground mine in Hwange, Matabeleland North, Zimbabwe. [6]

Makomo Resources owns and operates the mine. The mine began operating in 2010 and plans to continue until at least 2038. [7] Plans for an expansion are underway, the mine currently produces .99 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) and plans to produce 3.6. Further expansion of the mining area is also under consideration and this would extend the life of mine another 4 years. The mine has both underground and surface sections producing thermal and coking coal. The primary destination for coal from the mine is the Hwange power station. [8]

The mine has come under criticism from environmentalists for its proximity to Hwange National Park, the biggest game reserve in Zimbabwe. The disturbs the environment and can worsen human-wildlife conflict by causing animals to move in order to avoid disturbances from the activities, which includes significant amounts of blasting. [9]
